Bird Watching In Spain

Bird Watching in Ruidera

Bird watching in Las Lagunas de RuideraBecause of the amount of time we spend out in the country side we could not fail to notice the rich and impressive bird life.

The nature of the lagoons and its location in this hidden valley holds a great variety of both resident and migratory birds. Be it Flamingos, Lapwings, Golden Orioles, Beeaters, Eagle owls, Osprey or Golden eagles there is always something new to see.

Due to the different types of terrain in our immediate area we are able to recommend areas for specific species. With woodlands and forests, scrub habitats, grasslands, steppe and stony uplands, freshwater wetlands (both shallow and deep waters) all within a few kilometres makes this and ideal area to explore, (please have a look at some of the photographic opportunities that present themselves in Peter’s Bird gallery)

Of course spring and autumn are the best times of the year to come, in the spring time there is massive activity in the trees as the birds are preparing their nests ready for their young. Migratory birds stop off for a welcome rest in this area rich in food and water.

Bright colours can be seen as the Beeaters, Golden orioles, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Azure winged magpies, Hoopoe and many other species flash through the air.

Then of course there are the water birds, Lapwings, Water rail, Coots, Black winged stilts, Mallards, Pochards, Herons, Egrets, Bitterns, Storks, Flamingos and even the odd Black stork or Great bustard.

Let us not forget other well known species like the Cuckoo, Nightjars, Martins and Swallows, Larks, Pipits, Wagtails, Wrens and Chats, Wheatears, Thrush and Warblers, Flycatchers, Tits and Tree creepers, Nut hatches, Shrike, Jay, Sparrows and Finches, Cross bills and Buntings.

At the same time enjoy the wealth of smells and colours of the local flora or the changing of colours of the trees during autumn. Take a break from your hike and have a dip in the lagoons to cool off.

See some of the other wildlife like otters, weasels, wild boar, fox or our smaller friends, butterflies, lizards and other reptiles and insects. The area of Ruidera is very rich in all aspects.
